ALBANY, GA -- In FOX 31’s Good News of the Day, the most recent batch of Albany AmeriCorps Cadets graduated on Wednesday after completing a year of community involvement. Albany Mayor Willie Adams and Albany City Manager James Taylor were on hand during the ceremony.
During the year, AmeriCorps Cadets each served nearly 1,700 hours of volunteer work as well as training in fields such as CPR certification. Cadet Larry Hart received an award for exceeding that goal by completing 1,881 hours.
Cadet Eugene Papa also received an award for his extensive work with the AmeriCorps’ Buddy Ball program.
“We started a year ago and it seemed like the longest year of my life, but in other terms it's actually a great experience and I would urge people to do the same thing I did,” says Papa.
The Albany Police AmeriCorps cadets completed a combined total of 16,412.75 hours of community service during the last year.
Graduates receive a $5,000 education grant to help pay for items such as tuition or student loan payback.
A grant was approved for next year’s AmeriCorps program which starts in October.
