DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- Officers from several agencies teamed up for a massive gang sweep Friday morning. It ended with high level arrests from a major Albany gang.

It's being called one of the biggest gang busts ever in Dougherty County.

“It is the culmination of a thirteen month process that the gang unit has been working on,” said Albany Police Chief John Proctor.

54 men on 59 indictments. Police believe they all come from one gang. Now the Crips in Albany have been crippled.

“The majority of these individuals are leaders. Triple OGs, Double OGs and other significant ranks within the gang,” said Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards.

Some of those guys are already in jail for other offenses, but this Friday officers hit the streets looking to bring in the rest, arresting about a dozen people.

Their charges range from armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape, burglary and most importantly racketeering which means these guys could be going away for a very long time.

“The main thing about being charged with a racketeering offense is your not only responsible for what you do as an individual but you are also responsible criminally for what you and your criminal associates in the gang do as well,” said Edwards.

Police say this is only the beginning they now want to take down kingpins in other gangs.

“It sends the message to those out there that want to join a gang or be a part of a gang, that it will not pay, that you will not get away with it, you may think that you will but at some point you will have to pay the price for it,” said Chief Proctor.

The gang unit got some from several agencies to pull this off from the sheriff's office, the D.A. office, the Albany Probation Office, U.S. Marshalls and A.T.F. officers.

“When you see everybody come together and pull together to pull off such a successful effort as this has been and will continue to be it's a very proud day, it sure is,” said Sheriff Kevin Sproul.

Police say they are still looking for some of the men listed in the indictment. They are Morion Anderson, John Zackery, Saderick Blocker, Atraius Davis, Raphael Everette, Jontavis Keith, Alvin Cross, Monquavious Hampton, Demetrius Martin, and Boctavis Clyde.
