ALBANY, GA -- The Dougherty County School System wants to get the message out: school starts Monday, August 1, and they want students there.

“It's real important that parent partner with us and be a part of the education process and be attentive to what their child's assignments are and their practices for being to school, and being on time,” said R.D. Harter, the school system’s public information officer.

About a quarter of students have not attended the first day of classes in years past, an issue with which school officials have consistently struggled.

In an effort to boost first day attendance and avoid confusion, school officials released student schedules earlier this year. Superintendent Joshua W. Murfree Jr. has sent letters to local pastors in an effort to reach those who may not read or watch the news.

Each school will hold an open house for students Sunday, July 31. Class begins at all schools Monday, August 1.
