ALBANY, GA -- Albany State University recently welcomed James Burrell as its new director of Enrollment Services. Before joining ASU, he served as director of admissions at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky.

Burrell is a native of Williamsburg, Va., where he graduated from Bruton High School in 1984. He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Hampton University in 1988 and a Master of Public Administration degree with a specialization in information systems from Kentucky State University in 2003. In 2008, Burrell also earned a master’s degree in education with a specialization in enrollment management from Capella University.

His career in higher education began in 1991 as an admissions counselor at Hampton University, where he recruited potential students. In 1996 Burrell was named director of Admissions and Recruitment at Elizabeth City State University. He returned to Hampton University in 1997 as the assistant director of Recruitment and Training.

In 2000, Burrell joined Kentucky State University as the associate director of admissions. In 2003 he became the director of the department.  In this role he developed a comprehensive recruitment plan, which resulted in increasing freshman enrollment by 92 percent and total new student enrollment by 40 percent over a five-year period. During his time at Kentucky State, he also served with the Summer Academic Bridge Program as the university orientation instructor and as principal.

Burrell was also active in other roles at Kentucky State, including serving as advisor to the freshman class (2007-08), sophomore class (2008-09), Beta Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (2005-09) and student ambassadors (2000-11).

Burrell has been married to Juanita Burrell of Hampton, Va., for 14 years. They are the parents of Antoine, a sophomore at Hampton University, and Keona, age 7.
