ALBANY, GA -- The MCLB’s library is participating in the Department of Defense’s nationwide summer reading program.
Their theme is “A Midsummer Knight’s Read”. Base Librarian Amos Tookes says the theme expresses how the participants read books that will transport them to distant times with excitement. “So far we have 80 children participating in the program and over 300 books have been read so far by this group” says Tookes.
The summer reading program is about more than just reading books; participants also have incentives and hands on activities that tie into the reading. “The hands on activities reinforce the story. They’re actually participating in the story with the arts and crafts” says Tookes.
The library has a various programs and activities to participate in like free access to educational websites that normally charge an access fee, access to laptops that can be checked out and used within the library, tutoring, and more.
“Of course we also have our regular fiction and nonfiction books available and we try to keep those books updated constantly” says Tookes.
