Updated with arrest; The Albany Police Department investigates a deadly overnight shooting
ALBANY, GA. -- Detectives with the Albany Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Unit arrested Stephen Lewis, age 26, late last night. Their investigation revealed that Lewis was the second person involved in the shooting death of Bruce Mullen.
One weapon was recovered. Lewis has been charged with Murder, Aggravated Assualt, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
The search for the lead suspect, Joshua Johns, continues.
Initial Story
The Albany Police Department responded to a shooting around 12:18 a.m. at Hidden Oaks Apartments in the 300 block of South Mock Road Thursday morning.
Shortly after midnight, police were called to the breezeway of apartment 194 where 20-year-old Bruce Mullen of Macon, was found shot in the upper portion of his body.
Albany Police Department’s Media Manager Phyllis Banks-Whitley says ambulances arrived shortly after the call. “The individual was transported to the hospital and subsequently pronounced deceased at the hospital. Right now our detectives are working very aggressively to interview witnesses to determine what lead to the shooting” says Banks.
Albany State University President Dr. Everette J. Freeman released this statement: “Today is a sad day for Albany State University as we mourn the death of a student whose life ended tragically far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bruce Mullen. May they find comfort and peace. Under the circumstances, we will place our Counseling Service at the disposal of any ASU students who may need support in the days ahead.”
