ALBANY, GA -- The 4th of July holiday weekend is right around the corner and law enforcement officials are expecting many people to hit the road. To keep the streets safe, local agencies are teaming up.
The Albany Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, Dougherty County Sheriff's Office and the Albany Gang Task Force Unit were all on the streets on Wednesday. They said the slight inconvenience to drivers may help save a life over the holiday.
The team of law enforcement agencies held three separate road blocks in the span of one day. Holding up traffic, they stopped each vehicle for vital information.
“We're making sure our citizens are driving safely and driving with valid driver’s license as well as proof of insurance,” said Albany Police Captain Benita Childs.
Officials said they will be out and about monitoring the roads over the 4th of July weekend. They are stressing for drivers to follow all safety measures.
“Always carry your driver’s license. Have your proof of insurance available. Comply with license checks,” said Captain Benita Childs.
Police said anyone caught with a suspended license will be taken into custody. They made three arrests during the traffic stops on Wednesday.
One driver said law enforcement is doing a good job.
“You know you got a lot of people out here drinking and driving and they need to be caught,” said driver William Youngblood.
Officials said it's a privilege to be able to drive, not a right. They said as long as drivers are in compliance with the law, there should be nothing to worry about.
