Schnitzer Steel in Albany has collected food for national food banks in the past, but this year, they're keeping their food drive local

ALBANY, GA -- Schnitzer Steel Industries typically collects metal, but this week they’re collecting food.

For their food drive “Racing to Stop Hunger,” the metal recycling company is collecting non-perishable food from the community as well as perishables by appointment.

Schnitzer has participated in the company food drive before but this is their first year collecting regionally.

“The Schnitzer employees all felt that it would be best if we had local food banks to support as opposed to the national food banks or statewide so they selected Second Harvest, and we hope to raise a lot of money, a lot of food,” says Chip Koplin, Public Affairs Manager with Schnitzer Steel.

Their corporate headquarters is also matching dollar-for-dollar money the local branch raises as well as donating $1 per four pounds of food they collect. If employees volunteer at Second Harvest of South Georgia, corporate headquarters will donate $10 per hour, according to Koplin.

To donate food or money, visit the local Schnitzer branch at 1301 E. Gordon Avenue. The event wraps up on Saturday, May 14, but Koplin says they will continue collecting for a few extra days.
