The Department of Labor Professional Resume Writers and local employers will be giving one-on-one resume reviews on Friday
ALBANY, GA -- The Department of Labor here in Albany says the economy is making a turn for the better, and they want Southwest Georgians to have their resumes prepared.
The Department of Labor will hold a ResuMAY Fest on Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at their location on Slappey next to Albany Technical College.
“We have three gold certified resume writers in our office that will be critiquing your resume. In addition to that we have employers who will be looking at your resume and telling us if this resume will pass their test,” says Sharon Warren, a gold certified professional resume writer.
Brittany Hamilton sent her resume to the new Wal-Mart two weeks ago, and is planning to have the professional writers and other local employers review it on Friday.
“It was pretty long but I got it in and I want them to look at it,” says Hamilton. “They can learn things on their resume that they didn't learn at the school because it takes so much time because you’re in there with a lot of other kids so you can get hands on here.”
Professional resume writers will help you on a variety levels, from if you have a blank slate to if you already have a complete resume prepared.
“The first tip that I give is to make it not long because you want to capture the attention of the reader and hold that reader's attention. The second problem outside of length is format,” says Warren.
In high school and college many learned to format resumes chronologically which professional resume writers say could be the cause of resumes that are too lengthy.
“The style or the format or the concept that they're using may be outdated. You want to get up to date information on how to develop a resume and you want to get the employer's point of view as to what they're looking for,” says Warren.
While resumes will be critiqued by employers on Friday, there will not be any hiring.
The ResuMAY Fest is held in conjunction with the Albany Area Employer Committee, Wal-Mart, Voc-Rehab, WIA, TAA, Turner Job Corps, Albany Technical College, Albany State University and Darton College.
