(AP) -- Gov. Nathan Deal has signed a slate of legislative measures that would overhaul the state's public defenders council, approve new evidence rules and create a new system for compiling eligible juror lists.
The governor signed the three measures on Tuesday at the State Bar of Georgia headquarters. The public defender measure replaces the current 15-member board with nine new appointees tapped by the governor, the lieutenant governor and the House speaker and it gives the director more power over whom the system hires. The new evidence rules modify Georgia's law to adopt many federal standards. And the juror measure creates a new statewide database of eligible jurors based on voter registration, driver's licenses and other records.
