The Great American clean-up spread into Lee County this weekend
LEE COUNTY, GA -- The Great American clean-up spread into Lee County this weekend. Dozens of people were scattered all throughout the area, trying to beautify the community.
About 15 volunteers picked up litter along century road. They walked away with their bags full.
“A few toys, a television. We picked up a dresser and a computer table. Things that people just throw out of their truck or car on the side of the road,” said Rick Wheeler, who volunteered.
As part of the event the Lee County Sheriff's office got in on the action too taking prescription pills off the streets.
People were able to drop off prescription meds no questions asked at the jail.
Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals said they wanted to give folks and easy and proper way of disposing of pills.
“People use the pills and stuff like that for narcotic use, so we try to keep them off the streets. Plus another issue between doing this is to keep people from flushing it down the toilet or just throwing it down the creek somewhere,” said Rachals.
More than a dozen people showed up to drop off their pills.
The Great American clean-up is a nationwide event that takes place from March 1st through the end of May.
