Tax day postponed by holiday

ALBANY, GA -- As the 2011 tax season closed, last minute filers rushed to beat the April 18 deadline.

The deadline is normally on April 15 but because of Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, tax payers had three more days to settle the score with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Although given extra time, some completed their taxes before hand.

"I owed some back taxes, so I jumped on mine kind of early to get things going," said Jessie Balkcom.

Carlos Lewis preferred to wait. "I don't mind waiting. One thing, I'm not getting any money back. So, it's not hurting me in any kind of way," said Carlos Lewis.

Carlos was able to make it to the post office in time but not everyone was able to make it there before the business closed for the day.

The United States Postal Service opted not to extend their hours of operation. Instead, they accepted drop offs in their outbox at the location on Slappey Blvd. until midnight. Late filers also had the option to send their mail through the Automated Postal Center (APC) at Lafayette Station on Meredyth Dr.
