Fire reportedly started in kitchen
ALBANY, GA. -- An elderly Albany man remains hospitalized after an early morning fire burned his home to the ground.
Very little is left of Charlie Walters’ mobile home on South Madison. Walters' son, Elijah, says the fire started after Walters left something cooking on the stove. "When I got here, there was a lot of smoke and they were still putting out the fire," said Walters.
It apparently took about half an hour for the flames to destroy the home.
Morris Walters told us his father was suffering from smoke inhalation but was not seriously injured. "He was walking," he said. "They put him in the ambulance and carried him on but they say he had a lot of smoke in him."
Walters is in intensive care at Palmyra Medical Center and is expected to recover.
The brothers were relieved to find their father’s dog hiding in the corner of the fence. "She’s got a little hair scorched but other than that, she’s all right," said Elijah Walters.
Walters has lived at the same address for about 60 years. Now, he’s lost just about everything he owns. But his family members tell us they’ll do whatever they can to help him get back on his feet. "He’s got some kids," added Elijah Walters. "He’s still got five kids. I’m quite sure one of us, you know, we’re gonna’ help him. He’s a Christian, you know. Don’t smoke. Don’t drink, goes to church all the time."
