An officer with the Dougherty County School Police Department taught Crimestoppers a lesson in school security

ALBANY, GA -- At their monthly meeting, Crimestoppers offered a helping hand to the Dougherty County School Police Department and learned some surprising facts.

Lt. Ted Thomas discussed how the department operates including revising safety plans every year and providing 24-7 security for the school buildings.

He says officers try to build rapport with students so they can come to them for help instead of bringing weapons to school.

“With the elementary school students, we've seen a lot of them bringing weapons to school. If we can just teach our kids to talk about it with their teachers and principals they don't have to bring a weapon to school,” says Thomas.

He says the department could use help with their video cameras. Thomas says they are a big help but sometimes they don’t operate correctly.
