ALBANY, GA -- A controversial topic went before the Dougherty County School Board Wednesday afternoon. Doctors, nurses and other health care practitioners were invited to speak at the meeting.

They're trying to get the board to draft policy to allow breastfeeding by students and staff at schools.

But board members say they want to make sure breastfeeding doesn't become a distraction to learning.

“The feeling is that she has the right. This adult woman has right during her lunch break in a way that is not disruptive to the activities of the school to nurse her baby on school premises,” said pediatrician, Dr. Donna Edmond-King.

The board did not take any action today. They tabled the proposal until their meeting next month.
