Lee County Commissioners appoint Vic McKinley serve as Interim Manager for the Grand Island Club
LEE COUNTY, GA -- After former General Manager Uel Kemp resigned from the Grand Island Club in February, Lee County Commissioners were left to search for a new one.
A familiar face came knocking at their door wanting to fill the seat.
“The Lee Co Parks and Recreation Authority voted to bring back to Grand Island as their general manager, their retired Manager Vic McKinley,” says County Administrator Tony Massey. The Board of Commissioners appointed McKinley in a 3-1 vote, with Commissioner Dennis Roland voting against it.
Commissioners say they are driving their support behind McKinley, who retired as the club's general manager last year.
“Vic's last year before he retired he brought our county a profit and I think this year he'll do the same thing as the interim Grand Island manager,” says Chairman Ed Duffy.
In January, board members addressed the club's approximately $57,000 deficit from the first six months of the 2010-11 budget year. Massey says the big reason is the season.
“During the wintertime revenue is down because of the weather; play is poor. We're coming into the best months of the year: March, April, May and June. That's normally where they make up their deficit. I'm almost positive they will come in this year with a profit,” says Duffy.
For the last 19 months, Duffy says they have not had to transfer money from the county’s general fund for the Grand Island Club, which he hopes continues for the sake of the taxpayers.
“Grand Island has not had to have a transfer from our general fund in over 19 months. They made a profit last year and hopefully they're going to make a profit this year,” says Duffy.
He says McKinley has expressed interest in returning as the club's general manager for an extended period of time.
