Police searching for 2nd individual
ALBANY, GA. -- A suspect in Tuesday’s shooting of a Hispanic man is in the Dougherty County Jail but police are still searching for a second individual.
"We’ve been doing surveillance on this house behind us since about 10:30 or so this morning," said Major Bill Berry of the Albany Drug Unit. Berry says Dougherty County police asked his agents to conduct surveillance on Kawaski Bush.
"About 4:00 or so, we made the decision to use SWAT team to go in there and get him because of his past and arrest him on some existing warrants," said Berry.
Bush was taken into custody without incident and no weapons were found. But he will be charged multiple counts in connection to Tuesday’s shooting of Juan Pena.
Pena and his wife were approached by Bush and another man at the Flash Foods just off the Liberty Expressway. "Individuals said they had work available, were they interested," said Capt. Jimmy Sexton of DCP. "They said “yes” and they were basically lured to the Hardaway location."
In a bizarre coincidence, this home at 4222 Hardaway Road is vacant because the owner is in federal custody on child pornography charges. "The victim walked around the back of the house and the shooting actually occurred," said Sexton. "One shot came from inside the house, through the screen door."
That shot struck Pena in the side – further shots missed their target completely. He is recovering at Phoebe Putney Hospital.
Investigators were not specific about what led them to Bush or how he was located so quickly. "We developed some leads early on that Mr. Bush might be involved," added Sexton.
Kawaski Bush is being held at the Dougherty County Jail. Dougherty County police are still searching for that second individual but they don’t have much of a description. He is reported to be a black male wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and a red baseball hat. If you have any information, call the Dougherty County Police Department or Crimestoppers.
