The area will be turned into green space
ALBANY, GA -- A Merck & Co. plant that closed four years ago in Albany will be demolished and turned into green space.
But officials say it could take years to complete an environmental cleanup of the 1,000-acre site as Merck works to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater from more than 60 years of chemical manufacturing at the plant.
The state Environmental Protection Division says monitoring wells around the facility show there is no significant contamination outside the 700,000-square-foot facility itself.
The plant opened in 1952 and shut down in 2007.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that more than 774,000 pounds of treated chemicals were discharged into the air and water between 2001 and 2007.
