ALBANY, GA. -- A Hollywood star is raising the stakes and raising eyebrows with his highly publicized, bizarre behavior.

"I have one speed," said Charlie Sheen in a recent interview. "I have one gear – go." For the last several days, Sheen has done just that, appearing on major media outlets around the country. His often strange comments, like claiming he has “Adonis DNA” and “tiger blood,” have left his fans worried and millions of other downright confused.

Andy Martin of Albany’s Insight Psychotherapy says Sheen’s behavior has all the signs of bipolar disorder, a chemical imbalance in the brain. "Normal life has ups and downs but for someone who’s bipolar, those ups and downs go much higher than normal," said Martin.

Sheen has a history of drug abuse and Martin says Sheen’s recent comments about a possible drug overdose signal that he may experiencing a bipolar, manic episode. "Dying’s for fools," said Sheen. "I’m too smart to do that. I’m sorry for the guys that happened to but you should have read the directions before you showed up to party."

"A flight of ideas," said Martin. "Pressured speech. Rapid speech. To be grandiose. To talk about yourself the ways he’s talking about himself."

Martin also says Sheen’s role on the sitcom 'Two and a Half Men' as a hard drinking playboy is not the healthiest choice for an addict. "If you’re going to succeed in recovery, you have to avoid old playmates and old playgrounds and how much of a playground is it to stand around and mimic using chemicals?" said Martin.       

If Sheen is suffering from bipolar disorder, he’s not alone. The condition affects anywhere from 1% to 3% of the population, including many in Southwest Georgia. And it often goes hand in hand with addiction. "What happens with a lot of people who are bipolar, they start to come down from their manic episode and guess what they look for – something to keep them up," said Martin.
