MEMPHIS, TN. (AP) -- Former U.S. Department of Agriculture official Shirley Sherrod says getting over racism is key to reviving rural America.  Sherrod spoke at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Memphis on Sunday afternoon, telling her audience racial and ethnic groups must work together to improve communities, reported The Commercial Appeal.

Sherrod resigned under pressure from USDA in July after her speech to an NAACP rally was misrepresented on a blog. She received apologies from President Barrack Obama and the department, but declined another job at USDA.

Speaking in Memphis, Sherrod said people can do a better job working together than they can fighting each other.

Sherrod said poverty is the underlying impediment in rural areas and racism slows its solution.
