An emergency drill helped prepares Albany State University Police in the case of real emergency
ALBANY, GA -- An emergency drill helped prepares Albany State University Police in the case of real emergency.
“We’re testing our response to an active shooter,” said ASU Assistant Police Chief John Fields. “If an active shooter comes on campus and starts shooting people we would actually have to be the first ones to respond.”
Officers took part in the mock situation Tuesday. The scenario was that was a shooter on campus.
“We actually got a call that there was a shooter in the Student Union,” said officer Wayne Huntley. “What we actually have to do is go in and stop that threat.”
They say training helps keep them sharp.
“Training is very important. If you don't train you're going to fail. So the more we train the more we are equipped to respond to an active shooter or some type of disaster like that,” said Fields.
Officers who participated in the drill said it was a success. And even though it was practice, they say doing it felt like a real emergency situation.
Officers had to clear out building to ensure student safety. No one was hurt in the drill.
