ALBANY, GA -- In 1961, Albany State College students were arrested and expelled for participating in Civil Rights demonstrations.

Donchester Johnson was one of those students.

“When we was at Albany State in 1961, we were instructed by the dean of students of schools at the time not to participate, but you know how we were as children,” he says.

Along with other students, Johnson, age 18 to 19 at the time, participated in a march that began at the old bridge in Albany and went down Jackson to Pine Avenue.

“When the march came up we marched and when we marched we got arrested,” Johnson says. “When we came across the old bridge, we marched down to Jackson Street and cut in going back towards Pine where the courthouse was. Pritchett and his group stopped all of us. He told us to disperse and we did not disperse.”
