ALBANY, GA -- Some of the brightest young minds in Dougherty County got some special recognition Monday.

Six high school students were named STAR students by the Albany-Area Chamber of Commerce.

The STAR program honors students throughout the state for their achievements in the classroom.

“The students that are recognized today have to be in the top ten percent of their class, or top ten students of their class. They have to be nominated by a teacher and of course they have to exceed all normal expectations of a traditional student,” said Catherine Glover.

Six teachers were also given recognition. Those teachers were chosen by the winning students who each selected a teacher who have had a great impact on their own education.

The winning students are:

Amber Benson, Albany High School. Robbie Smith, Byne Christian School. Davidson Goldsmith, Deerfield-Windsor. Adriann Wilson, Monroe High School. Margaret Charles, Sherwood Christian Academy. Morgan Smith, Westover High School.
