An astronaut for over 17 years, Norm Thagard spoke to folks at the Weatherbee Planetarium Saturday
ALBANY, GA -- Folks at the Weatherbee Planetarium in Albany got a treat Saturday--they got a first-hand account of space travel from an astronaut.
Norm Thagard entered the space program in 1978 and was in it for over 17 years.
Thagard says science fiction in the 1950's got him interested in being an astronaut, but it was thanks to his wife that he actually got the chance.
“In 1977, when I was a senior in med school, I came home one day and my wife said I heard on the radio that NASA's taking applications for astronauts. I said well, I've got to send off an application and she said I already did!” Said Thagard.
He most recently flew as a cosmonaut researcher as a member of a Russian crew to the Russian Mir space station.
