We have an update on a story we first brought you last week about a man who wants a stop sign taken down in his neighborhood.

Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek has given the go ahead.

The four-way stop at Westview Drive and Pate Street will now become a two-way stop for traffic on Pate Street.

A man who lives on Westview complained to the commission last week that drivers there are stopping for no reason, since there is hardly any cross traffic to stop for on Pate Street.

Chief Cheek says they will monitor the intersection after the sign is taken down, just to make sure conditions remain safe.

A man says he wants a stop sign taken down in his neighborhood.

John O’Brien lives on Westview Drive off of Radium Springs Road and says that while the intentions and circumstances that led to the sign being put there were good, times have changed.

Hardly any traffic at the intersection of Westview Drive and Pate Street. John O’Brien remembers when it was an old dirt road.

“It was a dirt, corduroy type road, washboard type. Your car would slip and slide,” Said O’Brien.

A four-way stop sign was put up after a car slid off the road and into a ditch, killing a little girl on her bike. Residents say they understand the circumstances, but that times have changed. They say no one lives on Pate Street to generate any cross traffic to stop for. Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek says that’s due to the flood of ’94 flooding and destroying homes.

“A lot of homes were flooded and torn down and never rebuilt,” Says Chief Cheek.

O’Brien suggested that only the traffic on Pate Street should have to stop, and take down just the stop signs on Westview Drive.

Chief Cheek and Larry Cook with the County Public Works will look into that possibility, but will make sure any changes made will still be safe for the community.
