State to seek death penalty in case of slain Dougherty County officer

ALBANY, GA. -- Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards announced today that he will seek the death penalty for the accused murderer of a Dougherty County police officer.

20-year-old Dontavious Thomas allegedly shot and killed Lt. Cliff Rouse on December 24th of last year.

Rouse was responding to an armed robbery at the Pitt Stop Convenience Store.

Thomas was found hiding under a trailer in a nearby mobile home park and arrested.

He is charged with felony murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during a crime.

No trial date has been set.

Rouse was the first Dougherty County police officer killed in the line of duty.

He was an 18-year-old veteran of the force and left behind a wife and two children.
