Dozens of students participate in the inaugural MLK Jr. Dream Summit

ALBANY, GA. -- School was out today to honor the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, but some students still learned a lesson.

The inaugural Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Summit focused on empowering students to attain their dreams, and reinforced that most dreams take hard work and sacrifice.

Organizer Christopher Pike says the summit’s purpose was to combine history while motivating the students to live out their own dream.  “We want the youth in the community to understand the importance of the sacrifice of Dr. King and what he means to them and their ability to be free, and keep in mind that if they work hard to achieve their dreams – they will be successful” says Pike.

Workshops focused on how to engage, encourage, and inspire while learning lessons from the past.

Dougherty County School System Superintendent Dr. Joshua Murfree shared the importance of education and how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. successfully finished high school and attended college.  “When you think about and talk about Dr. King, you inspire young people as we talked about today.  We encourage young people, we motivate them, we want them to get their education and explain why they should get their education” says Murfree.

Other guest speakers include Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul, Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, Ms. Black Georgia Carla Hawkins, and more.

Multiple students FOX 31 spoke with say they enjoyed the workshops, feel motivated to do better in school and extracurricular activities, and hope they can attend the summit next year.
