East Town Civic League gives away food to celebrate MLK

ALBANY, GA. -- The East Town Civic League gave away more than 70 boxes of food Saturday to neighborhood residents in need.

Organizer Johnnie Pearl Hammond says the club was able to pay for all of the food with a $5,000 grant from AT&T.

Officials say they purposely scheduled the food giveaway for January 15th because it’s Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.

"This is what he would have done.  Give back to the community.  We just do it we try to do it every 3 months” says Hammond.

The food boxes included meat, bread, canned goods, eggs, salad, and a cake.
