ALBANY, GA -- The Albany Police AmeriCorps honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through service Saturday.

The Albany Police AmeriCorps is making sure the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. never fades from the minds of residents. The group hosted a ‘Day of Service’, which included a motivational speaker, trash pick-up, and a silent march.

Volunteer Trudy McNair says it’s great to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. ”To see the turnout and see that there are groups of people that are still motivating others who are too busy because of the changing times, so that they can look and see that there are still people trying to live a certain way and pass the dream on,” says McNair.

Folks participating in the ‘MLK Day of Service’ say they’re pleased to see young adults reaching out to their community. AmeriCorps Cadet Corbin Williams says they are doing this to set an example for the rest of the community. “We’re trying our best to give back to the community because there are not many people who do this. So if we take a step forward then I’m sure people will see us doing it and do the same,” says Williams.

Another group also held a march in Albany. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference hosted the Historic March of Remembrance. Residents heard stories from people involved in the Albany Civil Rights Movement, as well as music from the Freedom Singers. Folks then walked the same path Martin Luther King, Jr. walked 5 decades ago. The walkers stopped by the bus station and ended at the courthouse.

Some folks were also giving the gift of life for Martin Luther King Day. The American Red Cross set up a blood drive at First Mount Olive Complex. The drive was hosted by the Albany Baptist Minister’s Conference. Organizers say giving blood is one way to carry on Dr. King’s legacy of changing lives.

Over 100 people turned out to give blood. What are you doing to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the legacy he left behind?
