The Albany Fire Department says a majority of the calls they received were related to down power lines
ALBANY, GA -- Albany Fire Department employees say Monday was a rough day.
Firefighters responded to a total of 63 calls as of 3:30 p.m. on Monday. They received their first weather related emergency call at 5:50 a.m. on Monday. They say they primarily responded to down power lines or trees on power lines. One phone call was for a house fire.
Unlike their northern partners, Albany Fire officials say they aren’t used to so much ice.
“By virtue of where we are and where we are located, it’s just an added burden to us because we’re not used to dealing with it. Fortunately enough the roads weren’t iced over where we had a lot of black ice and stuff like that so our actual wrecks and that kind of stuff hasn’t been an issue with us,” says Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow.
Harcrow says their heavy fire gear is great in cold weather to keep firefighters warm unlike in the summer when it feels like too much for the hot weather.
Fire Department officials say in icy weather, if you do not need to leave your house it is best to stay inside to avoid an accident.
