Officials discuss the progress on the new EMS building

ALBANY, GA. -- Construction crews are hard at work building the new Dougherty County Emergency Management Services station headquarters on Palmyra Road.

Dougherty County EMS Director Bobby Tripp says officials are counting down the days until they can move in.  “They’re telling us that construction will be done by the end of April and that we should be able to move in by the middle of May” says Tripp.

The county leases the current EMS headquarters from Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  The lease is over at the end of January, so Dougherty County Commissioners and Phoebe agreed to extend the lease through June 2011.  The extension was approved so EMS staff has sufficient time to transition from the old to the new facility.

Officials say the new EMS headquarters may even cut down on ambulance response times because they won't have to fight so much traffic.  “Sometimes it’s difficult for us to get in and out at second avenue so we think it will be easier over there” says Tripp.

Taxpayers are responsible for the new headquarters because its being paid for with money from SPLOST V.

Officials are excited to move in and say the facility will enable them to improve their service Dougherty County residents.
