ALBANY, GA -- Five people died in car accidents this weekend in Southwest Georgia. Law enforcement officials say speed and rain caused some of those accidents.

They say winter is a busy time of the year when it comes to car crashes, and the danger is compounded when you add modern distractions.

“One third of all traffic fatalities in the state are related directly to speeding. Today for example when I was out running traffic, at least three out of every five drivers was on a cell phone and speeding, you put those two factors together and obviously we have an issue at hand,” said Cpl. Dan McMullen of the Dougherty County Police Department.

Mechanics advise that drivers constantly check their brakes and tire conditions during the winter months.
