Albany Police Chief John Proctor says 28-year-old Grady Rachel has been suspended without pay pending an internal investigation

LEE COUNTY, GA (AP) -- Not even police officers are immune from arrest when it comes to allegations of firing a gun to celebrate New Year's.

Authorities say an Albany police officer has been arrested for shooting off a gun in celebration of 2011's arrival early Saturday morning. Albany Police Chief John Proctor says 28-year-old Grady Rachel has been suspended without pay pending an internal investigation. Rachel, who lives in Lee County, was arrested by Lee County Sheriff's deputies. Authorities say he shot his weapon in a crowded area just after midnight.

Rachel did not immediately return a call for comment from The Associated Press. A Lee County jail official said Rachel has been released on $1,000 bond.
