Officials with the Department of Labor say those who will lose the benefits are those on extended benefits

ALBANY, GA -- Congress has not acted to extend federal unemployment benefits beyond this week, which means thousands of Georgians won’t be receiving unemployment benefits for much longer.

About 25,500 Georgians will receive their last unemployment check next week. Betty White is with the Georgia Department of Labor. She says not everyone on unemployment needs to worry about losing their financial safety net. “Those on regular unemployment continue to receive until benefits end. As long as they are eligible and continue to certify, they’ll receive benefits,” says White.

Officials with the Department of Labor say those who will lose the benefits are those on extended benefits. Those on federal extended benefits will receive checks until their benefits run out; however those on state extended benefits won’t receive checks after next week.

Visit the Georgia Department of Labor website for more information about the changes regarding  unemployment checks.
