NEWTON COUNTY, GA -- The father of the 9-month-old baby girl attacked by raccoons had raised the animals as pets since June and bottle-fed them, the Newton County Sheriff's Office said Thursday afternoon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that police said 35-year-old Michael Wayne Cannon placed the two raccoons in the family's backyard a few weeks prior to the November 3 attack, but the raccoons would often gain access into the home through open windows and side panels of window air conditioning units.

The baby was seriously injured in the attack, police said. She spent 12 days in the hospital.
