After nine years, BET's Black College Tour visits Albany State
ALBANY, GA -- The Black Entertainment Television network has hosted the Black College Tour for nine years. They stopped at Albany State University for the first time on their tour on Friday.
Students were able to play games, pick up free goods and not only listen to music, but sing or rap it themselves.
“They’re amazing! You’ve got some strong voices down here,” says Terrence J, BET’s 106 & Park Host.
It wasn't just the students that were excited to see the television network.
“A lot of students watch BET. They’ve been an enormous supporter of HBCU and Albany State. It’s great to have them here,” says ASU President Dr. Everette Freeman.
BET is hoping to spread an encouraging message during their visit.
“Our goal is to inspire and to motivate college students to continue on with their higher education so we come out here and have some fun," says Terrence J.
BET isn’t just providing entertainment; they’re recognizing Albany State as a Historically Black College.
“That’s the nature of our business. I mean, our audience is primarily African American or people who are interested in the African American culture. It’s an educational initiative,” says BET Black College Tour Manager Michelle Garner.
ASU's President says he has another reason to be proud of the school.
“It’s just another indication of how ASU is regarded nationally as one of the premiere HBCUs in the country,” says Dr. Freeman.
After years of asking BET to visit, ASU is finally getting the attention of that larger audience.
“It’s a small school, not a lot of people know about it, so it will bring awareness under the millions and multi-millions of viewers we have,” says Garner.
Students say they’re glad BET came to Albany State University and shed some light on the college.
