This weekend some the region’s best disk golfers were in Albany
ALBANY, GA -- You might not have ever heard of it.
“It's a lot like ball golf the rules are the same only these guys use disks, or Frisbees,” said organizer Mike Griner.
This weekend some the region’s best disk golfers were in Albany.
“We have our Second Annual Chehaw Fall Classic Disk Golf Tournament, and it is a PDGA sanctioned event,” said Griner.
“I've been playing disk golf for about three years. A lot of people have aspirations to go pro and there is plenty of people that's there only job. Myself it's a young sport, I've got to pay the bills,” said disk golfer Brian Lane.
For the players it's recreation but also stiff competition.
"I won in the advance division and had a lot of good competition. Some good guys pressing me at the end, had a lot of birdies going, so it was quite exciting today,” said Todd Arnold.
The disks aren't too different from a Frisbee. Except each one is specially designed to bend, curve or skip, and when these guys put it in the air, there is a certain technique to every throw.
“There's mid-range and driver disks just like you have in golf,” said Griner.
The game is played just how you'd think. Players start off at a tee. Throw their disks down the fairway, and into a disk catcher.
“The disk catcher is an interesting device. It's a basket with chains hanging, so when you throw the Frisbee it can get caught in the chains and fall in the basket and you're in,” said Arnold.
When it comes to the game, Chehaw has one of best courses in the nation.
“From the amenities here at the park, which are second to none, the course layout offers a wide diversity that the players have to be able to perform, and it's just a beautiful environment; great, great course,” said Griner.
