ALBANY GA -- The safety of those who step on board the Marine Corps Logistics Base is kept a high priority.

There's a dedicated group of nine people at the Marine Base in Albany who's sole focus it is to keep everyone on board safe. One big example of this is the fourth of July festivities where hundreds of people from all over come to enjoy food, music and fireworks.

“We're given an operation plan, a letter of instruction so we know the types of events and facilities out there. You know, looking at wiring, looking at fire hazards,” Said Merrill Dickinson, with the Base Security Program.

But on a more routine scale, and what most of their job consists of, is checking equipment on base.

“We use ammunition here to test fire the weapons that are rebuilt at the maintenance center. Traffic safety is a large part of our effort here. Then the industrial safety, you know, working with machinery, chemical hazards, noise hazards, lasers, but there are often things that happen on the base here that are not routine, so it always keeps you on your toes.”

It takes safety inspectors a full year to check out every facility on base, that means every room, every closet, inspecting every detail. And their hard work does not go unnoticed.

“We have one of the best command safety programs in the marine corps and it's been recognized as being exceptional for seven out of the past eight years,” Said Dickinson.
