ALBANY, GA -- A 60 by 30 foot American flag was raised at the Albany Mall Wednesday night as a part of a yearlong memorial for the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11th called The Patriot Flag.

The 60 pound flag will travel to at least one city in each of the 50 states. Albany was selected as the city in Georgia. The Albany Fire Department hung the flag on a ladder truck for 55 minutes to represent the time between the fall of the Twin Towers.

“It’s a great honor because this patriot flag and this whole ceremony really is dedicated to all those who gave their lives and continue to support this great nation,” says Colonel Terry Williams from the Marine Corps Logistics Base.

Other speakers at the ceremony along with Williams included Command Sergeant Maj. James Nelson with the Georgia National Guard and Chief James Carswell from the Albany Fire Department. The commemoration also included a rifle and canon salute.

The flag will end its tour on Sept. 11, 2011, at the site of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania.

The Patriot Flag program was established by a group of firemen in California.
