The hospital rolled out a new machine that gives doctors a closer look inside a patient's lungs
ALBANY, GA -- It's like a GPS, but for lungs and Phoebe Putney is one of the first medical centers in the South to have the technology.
The hospital rolled out a Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) machine, that gives doctors a closer look inside a patient's lungs. It is a catheter based system that can navigate airways to find potential cancerous spots.
Doctors say not only does it make diagnoses more accurate, but allows for earlier detection.
“Suppose it turns out it is not cancer, it is scar tissue. Then this helps to avoid those types of things. At the same time detect the cancer earlier so a person can be treated earlier before it can spread to other organs,” said Dr. Jyotir Mehta.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women.
