Former students who were kicked out for Civil Rights demonstrations recall their experiences in a book
ALBANY, GA -- Three women who were kicked out of Albany State University during the Civil Rights Movement played a special role in a book. Annette Jones White, Rutha Harris and Dr. Janie Culbreath-Rambeau share their stories in “Hands on the Freedom Plow.”
Wednesday at Albany State, as a part of Homecoming, the ladies signed the books for visitors. This year’s Homecoming is honoring former student who were kicked out because of their participation in Civil Rights demonstrations.
“I felt rejected. I felt I did the right thing, I always feel that way and always will. So it’s gratifying now to be asked back for the same thing that I was asked out for,” says White who was also 1961-1962 Miss ASU.
White also held a poetry reading and discussed her experiences in an event later in the evening.
This year's theme for Homecoming began as an idea in 2007 to reinstate Annette Jones White as the 1961-1962 Miss ASU, among other events.
