A former Cobb County high school orchestra teacher has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to his sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Steve Parkman pleaded guilty Thursday to cruelty to children and sexual battery. He also got eight years probation and has relinquished his teaching certificate.

A Cobb County judge recently tossed another case involving an affair between a teacher and a 17-year-old after the student said the relationship was consensual.

Parkman insisted his relationship was the same. But prosecutors re-indicted him, adding a sodomy charge because Parkman said he had oral sex with the student in public places.

The young woman’s father told the judge she was in counseling and approved of the deal.
