Local authorities and organizations teaming up to keep expired, unused pills away from harm

ALBANY, GA -- The Dougherty County Police along with other local groups are teaming up to prevent expired prescriptions from getting into the wrong hands.
Police officials say they don’t want people flushing outdated or unused pills. When flushed, the pills get into the water system and contaminate the ground.
Police say they also want to prevent young people from using expired prescriptions at “pill parties.”
“They raid mom and dad’s medicine cabinets and grab old prescription drugs, throw them in a bowl and dig in like a schmorgus board,” says Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek.
Operation Pill Drop is anonymous. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in front of the Albany Civic Center.
The pill drop is a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Agency, Dougherty County Police, the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Police Department and Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful.
