ALBANY, GA -- With video games, computers, and other technology, teachers say it can be a challenge to get kids to read.
Officials with the Dougherty County Family Literacy Center say about one-third of residents 16 and older are illiterate, meaning they read below a fifth grade reading level. Officials say that’s why it’s important to make sure children don’t fall behind.
Deerfield-Windsor reading teacher Peggy Kinsaul agrees. She says it’s always a good thing when a child reads. “My philosophy is whatever they'll read, let them read. Even if it's a comic book, as long as they're reading,” says Kinsaul.
Teachers say many students still enjoy reading, however technology is starting to overshadow books.
