ALBANY, GA -- One thousand flags are flying next to Albany Mall. It’s all part of the Southwest Georgia Exchange Club’s eighth annual Patriots’ Field of Flags display.

About 75 volunteers spent the day constructing the field. Field of Flags Program Chairman Marvin Mixon says the flags are meant to honor those people who put their lives on the line every day to protect our country. "It’s just a wonderful feeling knowing the sacrifices people have made for our country in the 235 years. It's our country, we made it what it is, and we want to keep it that way," says Mixon.

The flags will stay on the acre lot west of the Albany Mall for a week. The Exchange club is also ending the week long memorial with a concert Friday night as well as a memorial on Saturday.

On Saturday the names of Georgians who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan will be read, followed by a 21-gun salute and taps.
