Facility offers bowling, rock climbing, volleyball, etc.
ALBANY, GA. -- The motto of Darton College is ‘A Better Beginning.’
On Monday, the two year unit of the University System of Georgia did its best to live up to that creed by opening the new 22 million dollar, 63,000 square foot addition to its student center.
"This building represents an opportunity for students to be involved in the campus outside the classroom in extracurricular activities," said Gary Barnett, VP and Dean of Student Affairs.
"We have rock climbing, bowling, you’ve got food service, study areas, and racquetball," said John Reyhan, VP of Sanska.
Darton hopes that the new facility will further involve the college’s nearly 5,000 students in campus life.
In addition to the expanded social opportunities the new center provides, Darton College administrators see an academic advantage as well. They say that students that are involved in campus life are more likely to be successful in the classroom.
"We’re recognizing that students need to be engaged in order for them to be successful," said Dr. Peter Sireno, President of Darton College.
He’s hoping that setting minimum academic requirements to fully access the facility can motivate academic performance.
"To use the area that has all the gaming capability, they are going to have to attend class and they are going to have to do well in their classes," said Sireno.
