ATLANTA (AP) -- Former prosecutor Ken Hodges easily defeated state Rep. Rob Teilhet to claim the Democratic Party's nomination for Georgia attorney general, while ex-Cobb County Commission chair Sam Olens and state Sen. Preston Smith advanced to a runoff in the GOP race.

In other races for constitutional offices, State Sen. Ralph Hudgens and Atlanta attorney Maria Sheffield are headed to a runoff in the Republican primary for Georgia insurance commissioner. The winner will face Democrat Mary Squires, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Democrat Carol Porter won her party's nomination for the right to challenge Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle for the state's No. 2 job. Cagle had no GOP opposition.

Former prosecutor Ken Hodges scored a resounding victory over rival state Rep. Rob Teilhet in the Democratic race for the state's first open attorney general's seat in more than 60 years.

Hodges will face the winner of a three-way Republican primary in November. Cobb County Commission chair Sam Olens advanced to an Aug. 10 runoff with 40 percent of the vote, leading state Sen. Preston Smith, who was in second, and ex-U.S. Attorney Max Wood.

Joe Martin won the Democratic nomination for state schools superintendent. On the Republican side, Bartow County schools administrator John Barge earned 52 percent of the vote to defeat Irwin County schools official Richard Woods.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp earned the Republican nod to defend his seat for the first time since he was appointed in January after Karen Handel resigned to run for governor. Kemp, a former state senator, had 59 percent of the vote to lead former Sandy Springs Councilman Doug MacGinnitie.

State Sen. Gail Buckner, who led the crowded Democratic field with 35 percent of the vote, is advancing to a runoff. State Rep. Georganna Sinkfield of Atlanta clung to second place over business owner Angela Moore.
