All eight Republicans running to succeed Georgia Congressman John Linder say they support replacing the national income tax with a sales tax
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. (AP) -- All eight Republicans running to succeed Georgia Congressman John Linder say they support replacing the national income tax with a sales tax.
The plan, called the "fair tax," was popularized by Linder who sponsored it for years in Congress.
Libertarian talk show host Neal Boortz, who co-wrote fair tax books with Linder, says he doubts a Republican could survive in Linder's district east of Atlanta without backing the idea.
Linder's former chief of staff, Rob Woodall, says he knows the fair tax legislation best since he worked on it over the years.
State Rep. Clay Cox, the fundraising leader, says he also supports the plan but would want to require a supermajority vote in Congress to make it difficult for lawmakers to raise the sales tax in the future.
