ALBANY, GA. -- Slappey Boulevard has been a busy street for crime lately. Right in the middle of it is Alice Hay who works at Bill's Health Foods and Vitamins.
”I’m very concerned we sometimes just feel like sitting ducks here,” said Hay.
Hay has worked at the store for the past 21 years and for her crime has noticeably risen.
“You see more and more people having their purses snatched, you hear of more car-jackings,” said Hay.
Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek says being cautious is the key.
“There doesn't seem to be an exact pattern to it but it is showing just how bold and how brazen our criminal element is becoming and how dangerous it is to this community,” said Cheek.
The minor offenses are nothing compared to what Hay he has been through. She was the victim of an armed robbery several years ago.
“The guy came in tied me up put me on the floor,” said Hay. “He put the gun at my head and told me to close my eyes and I couldn't close my eyes I just kept talking to him and looking him in the eyes. I said to him I got what you came for now go away and leave me alone.”
She thinks pleading with the gunman got her through it.
“I told him about my entire family and he kept telling me to shut up and I couldn't shut up. I kept telling him about my family, my kids, my husband, anything,” said Hay
Despite her ordeal and the crimes just down the street she still punches the clock.
“You have got to make a living and you know that every day that you got to work you're taking your life into your own hands and you’re just hoping that it works out alright,” said Hay.
