Dougherty County Commissioners gave a letter of support to Albany State University officials seeking a renewable energy grant
ALBANY, GA. -- Dr. K. C. Chan, a Physics Professor at Albany State University presented a request to county commissioners for a letter of support to pursue a renewable energy grant.
The goal is to harness bio mass, solar power, water, and the landfill and convert them into renewable energy sources like electricity and fuel. “If we take the bio mass and convert it into bio fuel you can sell the fuel, not just for electricity, but for all different kinds of purposes” says Chan.
Commissioners have an agreement in place with the MCLB for converting waste into energy and this project has the potential to create a bio energy hub and give the entire community access to renewable energy.
Albany State University officials say if they’re awarded the grant it would bring more jobs to Southwest Georgia.
The letter of support from commissioners does not commit them to spending any money, it’s merely a sign of support for this new endeavor which could make Albany the greenest town in the south.
If the grant is approved Dr. Chan says he plans on asking the Department of Energy for $5 to $7 million dollars to help pay for it.
